OMG:
Most ridings that had a major university within them were Liberal or NDP. Kitchener-Waterloo ended up being PC. This is clearly due to Waterloo's typical apathy about everything.

Uuuuuh no it's due to RIM's influence. The university community is large, but RIM's is larger.

"I don't know anything about the parties so I'm not going to vote at all!"
UGH. Then go out and research them! People make me so mad sometimes.
Even a blank ballot is better than nothing! It sends politicians the message that our demographic IS still voting and that they need to work harder to appeal to us!
October 7, 2011 at 6:23 PM
I was at the station at V1 which was meant only for students living in residence. Less than half of the total amount of residents came out to vote. And a lot only came because their dons coerced them into it.

I came home for Thanksgiving and voted in my home (GTA) riding. I'd love to assume everyone did that but the voter turnout this year was <50% so I don't want to be delusional. *sigh*
October 7, 2011 at 7:04 PM
The incumbent's been there for 21 years... that's older than ~3/4 of the undergrads.
October 7, 2011 at 10:52 PM
Conservative for the win.. =)
October 7, 2011 at 11:02 PM
OP, and other leftists everywhere: Stop grasping at straws and look inwards - i.e. stop thinking bullshit like 'the other universities are left so if uw is right it must be wrong'. Only by looking inwards, at your own pie-in-the-sky flaws do you have a chance at beating the conservatives. I wish you luck.

Guelph, London, Windsor are generally Liberal areas. K-W, Grey County, Bruce County, Owen Sound, etc. are generally Conservative. It has nothing to do with student voting. It has to do with OLD PEOPLE voting. Students are not the majority.
October 8, 2011 at 12:43 AM
^ With the shit voter turnout this year, they could have been. And in a town of 90 thousandish, 30thousandish students make up a good portion of the population.
October 8, 2011 at 1:13 AM
@8 That's what OP said. Student apathy meant only the old people's voices were heard.
October 8, 2011 at 12:41 PM
Yeah pretttty sure it's the old people. Everyone is so fucking quick to call all UW students apathetic and shitty.
When I went to vote at the random church that was my voting location, all the people running it were old white ladies.. one of which who was vaguely racist in her small talk (calling chinese characters 'squiqqles' that she can't read)... have a feeling they might have been voting conservative. Not to mention the huge amount of conservative signs all around my neighbourhood.
Yeah, there's a student population but that doesn't mean we're responsible for voter apathy and conservatives...
October 8, 2011 at 3:57 PM
@OP fuck you, I will vote for who I choose. If student's are apathetic, its their choice and free will.
Who are you to say that students must vote Liberal or NDP? How do you know that the majority of the student populace did not vote PC?
October 8, 2011 at 4:24 PM
^This.
OP, who the fuck are you to say that if students vote its only for the parties you support?
October 8, 2011 at 4:43 PM
@12 fuck you. Most students are educated well enough about how the world runs and works that they can see past your horseshit conservative agenda and money grubbing selfish dipshit ways.
Fuck the conservatives and anyone who supports them.
October 8, 2011 at 5:56 PM
@12 and 13: Really? You really think the majority of student's would vote PC? You must be fucking blind and deaf...
October 8, 2011 at 5:58 PM
lol PC Party is the last party to give a shit about students. but sure, i'm glad you voted for them!
October 8, 2011 at 6:32 PM
@14 15 16
I didn't vote for PC. You don't know my political views. You made the assumption.
My sole argument is that OP is wrong for saying NDP/Liberal has to be the correct choice for students.
October 8, 2011 at 6:34 PM
@15, no you are. You can't seem to see outside your small little world and realize that the school is more than just your insignificant group of friends.
The majority of the students here are from well off backgrounds. Contrary to the popular belief that students are poor things, a significant number of them come from well off middle+ class working families. These people lean PC rather than NDP.
Math and Engineering are large faculties here. Many students work coop and are entering the workforce after their education. Sorry, again, the NDP agenda does not align to this demographic.
October 8, 2011 at 6:44 PM
But who is going to pay for my bullshit BA degree in ass grabbing (read: history, philosophy, etc) if 'progressive, forward thinking' waterloo students don't vote for the NDP!!?
October 8, 2011 at 8:15 PM
Witmer was the best qualified candidate in the K-W riding by far. Don't like Hudak, but I voted for Witmer.
October 8, 2011 at 9:45 PM
+1 to 18 & 20.
None of these promises to help students is actually going to benefit me, and I know Witmer – she is more than qualified for this riding, therefore she got my vote. I know I am not the only student around here who feels this way(contrary to what everyone is going to say).
October 8, 2011 at 10:33 PM
@18 So you're assuming anyone who votes NDP are lazy ass motherfuckers from "lower class" families who don't want to enter the workforce?
October 8, 2011 at 11:00 PM
^That, quebec separatists, or doofus sociology students. You pretty much got it.
October 8, 2011 at 11:35 PM
@18
well said, i admire you!
October 8, 2011 at 11:35 PM
Ok, as long as you also agree that those who would vote PC are cold, heartless, oil-loving, greedy ass motherfuckers that do what their mommy and daddy tell them to do... then I'll totally agree with you :)
October 8, 2011 at 11:40 PM
@18 I didn't know Math and Engineering students cared about politics...
