I believe it's a tongue-in-cheek reference to the redesign of the school logo that they tried to force through a little while back. It looked a lot like a rainbow laser light show and was pretty much universally reviled. They kind of backed off the design for a bit but if you look around campus you'll see it's starting to infiltrate a lot of the signage and displays.
